The Ultimate 7-Day Spiritual Journey
The Buddhist Circuit spans across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (and into Nepal), tracing the footsteps of the Buddha. Here is our highly recommended 7-day itinerary for a fulfilling spiritual experience.
Day 1-2: Bodh Gaya (The Enlightenment)
Start your journey where Buddhism was born. Spend two days meditating under the Bodhi Tree, visiting the Mahabodhi Temple, and exploring the international monasteries.
Day 3: Rajgir & Nalanda (The Teachings)
Drive to Rajgir to visit the Vulture Peak (Gridhakuta) where Buddha delivered many sermons, then explore the ancient ruins of Nalanda University, one of the first great universities in recorded history.
Day 4: Vaishali (The Last Sermon)
Head to Vaishali, the site of the Buddha's last sermon. Visit the Ashoka Pillar and the Buddha Stupa.
Day 5-6: Kushinagar & Sarnath (The Mahaparinirvana)
Drive into Uttar Pradesh to visit Sarnath (where Buddha gave his first sermon) and Kushinagar (the site of his Mahaparinirvana).
Day 7: Lumbini, Nepal (The Birthplace)
Cross the border into Nepal to visit Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, wrapping up your complete circuit.
Vehicle Recommendations
Because this itinerary requires significant inter-city driving over 7 days, we highly recommend booking a comfortable SUV like a Toyota Innova Crysta for families, or a Tempo Traveller if you are traveling in a larger group.
